You look at it while your child is still in the chair. Anything sitting uneven gets fixed then, which is easier for everyone than noticing it at home.

A toddler crying at a first haircut is normal. It is not a sign it is going badly and it is not something to apologise for. Clippers are loud, the cape is strange, and a stranger is standing close. Most children are easier by the second visit, because it is no longer unknown.
Three things make it easier, none of them about the salon. Book a time of day when your child is usually at their best, not right before a nap or a meal. Decide the cut yourself before you arrive. And say at booking that it is a first haircut, so it is known before you walk in.
If it is the clipper noise that upsets them, say so at the start. And if your child genuinely will not have it today, say that too — a shorter cut that gets them home calm is a better outcome than a perfect one that makes the next haircut harder.
