Root Touch-Up inWinnipeg.

Regrowth covered, tone matched to the colour already on your lengths. From $70, an hour and a half, the same result every cycle.

This is a maintenance appointment, not a change. You already have the colour you want. A root touch-up keeps it — colour on the new growth only, matched to what is already sitting on your lengths.

It is the most repeated booking on our menu. Colour does not fade at the root, it gets pushed down the head, and by week four the line at your part is the only thing you see in the mirror.

On the menu it is Root Touch-up, from $70, 1 hr 30 min, with Zahara, Navpreet or Aman. New to us? The free 15-minute colour consultation is how your shade gets matched first. It sits inside the wider hair colour menu.

When the line starts to show.

Regrowth appears in the same order for almost everyone. The parting goes first, because it is the one strip of scalp you look straight down at. Then the hairline at the temples. Then the crown, which you cannot see and someone else usually mentions.

What pulls you toward four weeks rather than six is contrast. A deep brown over a light natural base shows quickly. Coloured hair over grey shows quicker still.

Book at the front of that window and the job stays small: colour on new growth, an hour and a half, from $70. Leave it too long and the regrowth stops being a band and starts being a section, the lengths drift off tone, and matching one to the other is no longer a single application.

Grey coverage, honestly.

Grey is why most people book this on a schedule instead of when they feel like it. It is not simply hair without pigment — it is usually coarser, the cuticle sits tighter, and it takes colour more reluctantly than the hair around it. Your artist formulates for that, normally with more depth or a warmer base underneath, so it does not end up flat or translucent in daylight.

Two honest points. Grey shows faster than anything else, because white regrowth against coloured hair is the highest contrast there is, so heavy grey usually puts you at four weeks rather than six. And wiry grey along the hairline is not always covered completely on a first pass. It can be processed longer or pre-softened, and that is a conversation in the chair, not a promise on a web page.

If you would rather blend grey than block it out, say so. Foils break it up instead of covering it flat, and plenty of people alternate the two.

What actually happens in the chair.

  1. 01

    We match before we mix

Your artist reads the regrowth against your lengths in salon light, checks how much grey is in the new growth, and confirms the formula. If you are new to us, that is what the free consultation is for.

  2. 02

    The number comes first

$70 is the starting point. Length, density and how much regrowth there is to cover move it from there. You hear the price before any product is mixed.

  3. 03

    New growth only

The application is sectioned and kept to the regrowth band. Colour is not dragged down the lengths, because overlapping onto hair that is already coloured causes banding and avoidable damage.

  4. 04

    Process, wash, finish

Timing is watched, not guessed. A gloss or toner goes through the lengths only if the tone genuinely needs it, then it is washed, treated and styled.

Roots, or the whole head?

Same hour and a half, same chair, different amount of hair.

Root touch-up — from $70. New growth only. Your lengths keep the colour they already have. Right when you are happy with your colour and just want the line gone.

Full head colour — from $100. Every strand to one depth, root to tip. Right when you are changing shade, or when the ends have faded so far that colouring the roots alone would leave you wearing two colours.

If the roots are fine but the tone has gone brassy, neither is what you need — Wet Toner, Wash and Blowdry is from $45 for an hour, on hair already lifted. That $45 is the toner alone, not what a colour service costs. Old box colour or banding underneath is a colour correction instead.

Questions we get asked.

How much is a root touch-up in Winnipeg?

A root touch-up starts at $70 and is booked for an hour and a half. Length, density and how much regrowth there is to cover set the final price, and your artist confirms the number before anything is mixed.

How long does a root touch-up take?

Book an hour and a half. The colour only goes on the new growth, but it still has to process properly, and the appointment includes the wash, a treatment and a finish.

How often should I get my roots done?

Most people settle on a four to six week cycle. Covering grey usually puts you nearer four, because white regrowth against coloured hair is the highest contrast there is. Booking at the front of that window keeps the job small and keeps the price at the touch-up rate.

What is the difference between a root touch-up and a full head colour?

A root touch-up colours the new growth only and leaves your lengths as they are, from $70. A full head colour takes every strand to one depth, root to tip, from $100. Both run an hour and a half. Choose the touch-up if you are keeping your colour, and the full head if you are changing it.

Does a root touch-up cover grey?

Yes, and grey coverage is one of the main reasons it is booked. Grey is coarser and takes colour more reluctantly, so your artist formulates for it and may process it longer. Coverage on wiry grey along the hairline is not always total on a first pass, and you will be told that in the chair rather than afterwards.

What if I have left it too long?

Nothing is ruined, it just changes what the appointment is. Once the lengths have drifted off tone, colouring the roots alone would leave you wearing two shades, so a full head colour from $100 is usually the honest recommendation. If old box colour or banding is involved it may be a colour correction from $100 over three hours.

Do you take walk-ins?

We do take walk-ins, but please call 431-844-5500 first to check availability before coming in. A root touch-up is an hour and a half of chair time with a specific colour artist, so it is far easier to hold you a slot than to find one on the day.
