What hair colour actually costs in Winnipeg

Published prices for every colour service we offer, and an honest account of why the same service quotes differently from one head of hair to the next.

· Artistly Salon & Spa, Winnipeg

There is a particular kind of bad afternoon that starts with a price you saw online and ends at the front desk finding out it was for something else entirely.

It usually goes like this. You see "colour from $45," you book, you arrive wanting to go from box-dyed brown to a soft blonde balayage — and the actual number is four times that. Nobody lied to you. That $45 was a toner. What you asked for is a three-hour lightening service. They are both "colour" and they have almost nothing to do with each other.

So here are our real prices, and more usefully, here is what moves them.

The actual price list

These are the starting prices at Artistly on St Anne's Road. They are published on every service page on this site, not quoted on the phone.

"From" is doing real work in that table, and the rest of this post is about what it is doing.

The four things that move the number

How much hair there is

This is the biggest and least glamorous factor. Mid-back hair is not the same job as a bob — it is more product, more foils, more time under the hands. A balayage on short hair and a balayage on hair past the shoulder blades are the same technique and genuinely different services.

What is already on your hair

Virgin hair lifts cleanly and predictably. Hair carrying two years of box dye does not. Old colour is stubborn in a way that is not about effort — the pigment sits differently and comes out unevenly, which is why previously coloured hair sometimes needs more than one session to land somewhere you would actually want to be.

This is the single most common reason a quote goes up between the consultation and the chair. It is also the reason we would rather look at your hair before either of us commits to a number.

How far you are going

Two shades lighter is one appointment. Dark brown to ash blonde is a project. The distance between where your hair is now and where you want it decides whether this is a service or a plan — and a plan costs what a plan costs, but you get told that up front, not halfway through.

Who is doing it

Our artists do not all charge the same, and we do not hide that. When you book, you pick your artist and you see their price before you confirm. No tier codes, no "prices may vary," no surprise at the desk.

Why colour correction is priced the way it is

Colour correction starts at $100 and is booked as a three-hour appointment — the same starting price as a full head colour but double the chair time. That is not arbitrary. Correction is the work of undoing something: box dye, brass, orange bands, patchy regrowth, a home kit that went a different direction than the box promised.

The honest part is that correction is the hardest service to quote sight-unseen, because the price depends entirely on what is already there. Sometimes it is one session. Sometimes it is staged over two, because taking it all the way in one sitting would cost you the condition of your hair. We will tell you which one you are looking at before you book, and if the honest answer is "not in one appointment," you will hear that too.

The free consultation is the actual answer

Fifteen minutes, no charge, no obligation.

An artist looks at your hair, asks what has been on it, hears what you want, and gives you a real number and a real timeline. That is the entire appointment. You can walk out and think about it.

It is worth doing before any big colour change, before any lightening, and it is essentially mandatory for previously coloured or box-dyed hair — because that is exactly the case where a phone quote is a guess and an in-person quote is a fact.

Common questions

How much does balayage cost in Winnipeg?

At Artistly, balayage and custom blonding start at $180 and are booked as a three-hour appointment. The final price depends on hair length, density, and what colour is already on the hair. A free consultation gives you your actual number.

Why is toner so much cheaper than the other colour services?

Because it is a different job. A toner adjusts or refreshes tone on hair that is already the right level — it does not lighten. It starts at $45 and takes about an hour. It is often what people are seeing when they spot a low "colour" price online.

Do I need a consultation before booking colour?

It is free and takes 15 minutes, and it is worth it before any big change. For previously coloured or box-dyed hair, and for any correction, it is genuinely the right first step — it is the only way to give you a price that holds.

Can you fix box dye?

That is what colour correction is for — from $100, booked as a three-hour appointment. Whether it takes one session or two depends on what is on your hair, and we will tell you which before you book rather than after.

Do prices differ between artists?

Yes, and you see the difference before you confirm. You pick your artist during booking and their price shows on screen.

What is the cheapest way to keep colour looking fresh?

A root touch-up from $70, on a regular schedule, rather than waiting until you need a full head colour or a correction. Maintenance is always cheaper than rescue.
