Balayage vs highlights: which should you book?

Describe where you want brightness, how you wear your hair and how you want the colour to grow out before picking a service.

Start with where you want the brightness

“I want lighter ends, but I still want to look brunette at the roots.” That brief is different from “I want to look brighter all the way up to my part.” Before choosing an appointment, describe where you want the lighter pieces, how much of your natural colour you want to keep and how you usually wear your hair.

A reference photo helps, but explain what you like about it. Is it the bright face frame, the soft transition from dark to light, or the amount of blonde? Two photos can share the same tone while needing different placement.

What balayage means on the booking menu

Artistly lists this service as Balayage / Custom Blonding. Its balayage service page describes freehand painting, with brightness placed through the hair and a softer transition near the roots. The word “custom” is useful: the placement should be discussed around your starting colour, your goal and how you wear your hair.

If you want to keep depth at the roots while adding brightness through the lengths, explain that goal when discussing balayage and custom blonding. Do not treat the service name as a promise that every inspiration photo can be achieved in one visit. Your artist needs to assess the hair you have now.

When highlights are the conversation to have

Artistly offers Partial Highlights and Full Highlights. Its highlights service page describes deliberately placed foils. When you want brighter pieces close to your part, a more extensive distribution of lighter strands, or a particular pattern of dimension, discuss the placement you want rather than choosing only by the word “highlights.”

Partial and full are coverage choices to confirm with your artist. Show where you want the brightness to be visible when your hair is down, tied up or parted differently. Ask which sections will be included in the highlights appointment you choose.

Balayage and highlights are useful booking labels, but the final result depends on the agreed placement and your starting hair. You do not need to diagnose the exact technique yourself. A clear goal gives the artist more useful information than a technique name alone.

Grow-out is a planning question

Tell your artist how often you would realistically like to return and what you notice first as your colour grows out. A softer transition near the roots may suit someone who wants to keep more of their natural depth. Someone who wants brighter colour close to the scalp may have a different maintenance priority.

Neither choice removes maintenance. Ask which part of the result may need attention first: placement, root growth, tone or the appearance of the lengths. Those are separate questions, and they do not automatically require the same service on every visit.

If your main concern is tone rather than additional brightness, the root touch-up or toner guide explains another useful booking distinction. Discuss it before reserving new lightening work.

Bring your colour history to the consultation

Tell the artist about previous salon colour, home colour, recent lightening and chemical treatments. If you know the products or dates, bring that information. If you do not know, say so. A current photo in ordinary light and an inspiration photo can help explain the starting point and the goal.

Ask what is realistic for the appointment, whether the change needs a staged plan, and what the complete booking includes. Confirm the finish, any related colour work, the expected time and the total quote before the service begins. This is especially useful when you want a substantial change or you are unsure which menu option fits.

Book the goal you have agreed on

The current Artistly booking menu includes Color Consultation, Balayage / Custom Blonding, Partial Highlights and Full Highlights. The colour consultation is currently listed as free and 15 minutes. It is a practical starting point if you need help choosing.

You can review the colour consultation, balayage and highlights pages, then book the consultation or your agreed service. Check the current booking menu for available artists and appointment times.

A useful brief is: “I want brightness here, I want to keep this much of my natural colour, and this is how often I would like to maintain it.” Artistly is at 567 St Anne’s Road, Unit 2, in St Vital, Winnipeg. Call 431-844-5500 if you need help selecting the booking.
