Balayage inWinnipeg.

Hand-painted colour that grows out soft instead of leaving a line. Three colour artists, a free consultation first, and a real price before anything is mixed.

Balayage is painted on by hand. Instead of weaving colour into foils section by section, your artist sweeps lightener onto the surface of the hair where the sun would naturally hit it — brighter through the mid-lengths and ends, softer at the root.

That single difference is why people ask for it. There is no hard regrowth line, so when it grows out it looks like it was meant to. You are not on a six-week clock to keep it looking deliberate.

At Artistly it is booked as Balayage / Custom Blonding — the "custom" part matters, because where the brightness sits is decided against your face, your natural depth and how you actually wear your hair, not against a photo on a wall.

What actually happens in the chair.

  1. 01

We look at your hair first

Your artist checks your natural depth, what colour is already on the hair and its condition. Box dye and old colour change what is possible — this is where that gets said out loud, not halfway through.

  2. 02

You agree the price before we start

$180 is the starting point. Length, density and how far you are going set the rest. You hear the number before any product is mixed.

  3. 03

    The paint

Lightener is applied freehand and left to lift under watch. This is the slow part, and it is the part that decides whether the grow-out looks soft or blunt.

  4. 04

    Toner, wash and finish

Once the lift is where it should be, a toner sets the final tone — cool, warm or somewhere between — then it is washed, treated and styled so you leave seeing the finished result.

Balayage, highlights, or something else?

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. The short version:

Balayage is painted on freehand. Soft grow-out, lower maintenance, brightness concentrated through the mid-lengths and ends. Best if you want to look lighter without committing to a salon visit every six weeks. From $180.

Highlights are woven into foils. More uniform lift, more brightness right up at the root, more coverage overall — and a regrowth line that will eventually need doing. Best if you want maximum lightness or full grey blending. Partial from $100, full from $180.

A full head colour changes everything to one depth, root to tip. From $100. And if a previous colour has gone wrong, colour correction from $100 is its own booking — bring it to the free consultation first so it can be planned properly.

If you genuinely do not know which one you want, book the free consultation. It costs nothing and it is a far better use of fifteen minutes than guessing.

Questions we get asked.

How much does balayage cost in Winnipeg?

At Artistly, balayage and custom blonding start at $180. The final price is set by your artist and depends on your hair length, density and how far you are going from your current colour. You are told the exact price before any colour is mixed.

How long does a balayage appointment take?

Set aside about three hours. Longer, thicker or darker hair going significantly lighter can run longer — your artist will tell you at consultation if that applies to you rather than surprising you on the day.

What is the difference between balayage and highlights?

Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair, so it grows out softly with no hard regrowth line. Highlights are woven into foils section by section, giving more uniform lift and more lightness at the root. Balayage is lower maintenance; foils give more coverage and brightness. We do both.

Do I need a consultation first?

Not required, but recommended for any big change, for previously coloured or box-dyed hair, and for corrections. The colour consultation is free and takes 15 minutes — it is how the plan and the price get agreed before you sit down.

How often does it need redoing?

Most clients come back every three to four months. Because the colour is painted rather than foiled from the root, it grows out without an obvious line. A gloss or toner between appointments keeps the tone from going brassy.

Can I get balayage on dark or box-dyed hair?

Usually yes — but it may take more than one session to get there safely. Box dye in particular can lift unevenly. Book the free consultation so your artist can look at your hair and tell you honestly what is achievable in one appointment and what needs a staged plan. We would rather say that up front than halfway through.

Do you take walk-ins?

We do take walk-ins, but please call 431-844-5500 first to check availability before coming in. Balayage is a three-hour appointment with a specific colour artist, so it rarely fits a walk-in slot without notice.
